Elizabeth Smart, who at 14 years of age was kidnapped and held for nine months by traveling preacher Brian David Mitchell, married her fiance, Matthew Gilmour, in Hawaii Saturday. It was announced last month that Smart was engaged to the Scotsman and their wedding reportedly was set to take place this summer. In an effort to keep their wedding free of paparazzi and the like, their wedding date was moved up so as to keep their nuptials private. A family spokesman explained: “Elizabeth’s desire was for what most women want — to celebrate her nuptials in a private wedding with family and close friends. She decided, about a week ago, the best way to avoid significant distraction was to change her wedding plans and to get married in an unscheduled ceremony outside of Utah.” The spokesman went on to say that the couple were beaming as they left the Laie Hawaii Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints following their wedding, and they exchanged their “I do’s” in front of family and a few friends.
